The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’of the Nigeria Customs Service said that it intercepted 30 exotic vehicles mostly of 2018 model along Lagos/Ibadan expressway between April 10th and May 15th 2018.
Speaking at a press conference last week in Lagos, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the unit, Comptroller Muhammed Umar, said that the seized vehicles included, seven Toyota Hilux (2018 models), three Toyota Prado Jeep(2017), one Range Rover, one Ford Edge(2015); all with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N858, 182, 870. 31.
He also gave an indication that some were evacuated from car shops based on reasonable suspicion that their owners smuggled them into the country and may not have paid duties.
He also said that in such cases, importers are required to provide evidence of payment of duties to be able to take their cars back within a grace period.
The Controller said some of the vehicles stay longer because of court processes on them even as he warned those who have chosen the path of smuggling to turn a new leaf, the Customs Controller appealed to Nigerians to be patriotic and report smuggling activities to the Customs.
