The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has applauded the partnership which was recently entered into by the Nigerian Army and an indigenous motor manufacturing company, Innoson Motors Manufacturing Company for modification of some of its equipment, local production of armoured vehicles and other military hardware.
In a recent chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, the Acting National Executive Director of CILT, Mr. Paul Ndibe, said that by doing that it means that the government has keyed into the initiative.
He stated that: “Innoson motors are producing cars for the civilians and they have not dominated the market and the government should either boost internal economy or support the initiative of Innoson by telling him to manufacture vehicles for the Nigerian army. Everybody will expert that the vehicles that the army will use will be rugged and have spare parts. So by doing this it means that the government has keyed into the initiative. So if Innoson should expand the scope and be able to build both for the military use and civilians, it will boost the economy”.
He also urged the government to mandate other major brands in the country to set up car assembly plants in the country instead of importing, adding that it will create more employment and bring development to the country.
“ Just like the government is in a way helping to support Innoson motors by buying or keying into it, they should also be able to tell these major brands in Nigeria to set up plants in Nigeria instead of importing from outside. So that we will start building on our human capacity in terms of repairs and know how, the infrastructural development will be there and of course employment will grow, the economy will also grow. It is a win-win arrangement. We can have the license to build these to our own taste so that we can have specifications. We have the knowhow and of course the economy will grow and there will be employment”, he concluded.
