The Chattered Institute of Logistics and Transport(CILT), has said that until the Ajaokuta Steel project is put into consideration, it will be difficult for the Nigerian automobile policy to yield the desire fruits, even as it called on the government to review both the automobile policy and the Ajaokuta steel company policy.
The National President of CILT, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibril who disclosed this last week to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, also said that the policy lacks legislations that could support it.
He also maintained that for the policy to make a head way, there is need for good infrastructure to be in place, adding that the nation’s transport industry is old.
On the automobile policy, he said, “I have not seen the fruits yet, not to talk of whether it is good or not, there should be a review and that review must be in such a way that we must take into consideration, the Ajaokuta project. With the Ajaokuta project on board, our automobile policy can be very useful to this country. And to be honest with you, we have a policy where you cannot even implement the provisions of that policy; you cannot come out with subsidiary legislations that could support the implementation of the policy, and then you have a big challenge. I think we need to first and foremost build infrastructure that we can build as much as we want to and then we can move on from there”
Jibril, expressed optimism that the yet-to- be-assented to National Transport Commission (NTC) will address the numerous challenges in the transport sector of the economy, stressing that the bill when signed is going to make the NTC a commercial regulator.
