President General, United Berger Motor Dealers Association (UBMDA), Mr Metche Nnadiekwe, has said that his administration at Berger only allows vehicles which have paid correct Customs duty to come into the automobile market.
Metche who said this in a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Apapa last week also maintained that his administration only patronizes vehicles that come into the country through the seaports.
The president of the Africa’s biggest automobile market, assured intending customers that any vehicle purchased from the market are free of customs duty evassion.
“Even before the border closure, for a long time, we have stopped smuggled cars from coming into the Berger car mart”
“We have told our dealers not to smuggle vehicles here. Our vehicles come through the seaport and we pay genuine Customs duty. If you purchase any vehicle here, you can rest assured that Customs cannot seize your vehicle on the road.”
Nnadiekwe, however charged the Customs service to explore strategic measures to check smuggling of vehicles, saying that sealing car marts across the country is frustrating the business of genuine auto dealers.
Also speaking, a car agent at the Berger market, who gave his name as Chinonso Stainless, said that the automobile market now operates according to international standard and as a result, it will be difficult to see smuggled vehicle in the market.
“Here, you can hardly see any smuggled vehicle in this market, the vehicles here have gone through proper customs screening before they are found here. If duties are not properly paid on your vehicle, it will not be allowed into this market”, he said.
