The recent move by SIFAX Group, a multinational corporation and owners of Port and Cargo Handling Services to venture into Roll On Roll Off operations has led to the engagement over 150 personnel as drivers for onward transfer delivery of imported vehicles to its off dock facilities at Okota a suburb in Lagos State.
Confirming the new development to Auto Port Weekly recently in Lagos, Head Corporate Affairs and Marketing, of the multinational group, Mr. Muyiwa Akande noted the terminals at Okota have the capacity to handle over 1,500 units of vehicles per shipment.
He said the project is also aimed at providing job opportunities for people who are the driving category of the nation.
"Talking about empowerment, we employed over 150 drivers for this project, but I think the human resources department will get the current figure, but I know it’s more than 150", the image marker said.
Akande added that despite the fact that the RORO ship would be calling at the terminal at Ports and Cargo Handling Services at Tin Can Island Port monthly, there is a need to get competent drivers that would transfer the vehicles from the port to the off-dock terminals for effective delivery to consignees.
The spokesman added that if there are any reasons for the company to enter into an agreement with another shipping line for the sole aim of vehicle importation, it will have to expand.
According to him, SIFAX group has effective strategies in place for the RORO services, noting that transfer of vehicles to the off-dock facility has security personnel monitoring.
He also reiterated that "we have arrangement with security agencies; like the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corp(FRSC) and our own security outfit".
