The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Seme Command says it raked in N1, 944, 007, 795 in the first quarter of 2012.
The amount fall short of the N2.4 billion the command targeted for the period. Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Ernest Olotta, who disclosed this explained that the shortfall in the quarter's revenue was due to the January protest over fuel pump price protest which created a lull for importers.
He also said the fact that the first quarter was filled with anticipation for importers made them exercise caution in transacting businesses along the border and thus affected the revenue margin of the command. The next quarter holds a lot of promise, he enthused.
He disclosed that the sum of N36 million was realized from Duty Paid Value (DPV) during the period under review.
According to Olotta ,the Seme command arrested 17 suspected smugglers along the border. Some of the smuggled items include; rice, textiles and motor vehicles.
He said five of the suspected smugglers have been convicted by the court, while others are at different stages of prosecution.
