Clearing Agent In Court For Allegedly Obtaining N8m By False Pretenses

A 64-year-old clearing agent, Sunday Kpakpo, who allegedly obtained N8 million under the pretext of clearing a Toyota Camry, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Kpakpo, who resides at 47, Shodipo St., Dopemu, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy, obtaining by false pretenses and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused committed the offences on February 2015 at Ojodu, Lagos.

Akeem said that Kpakpo collected the sum from Mrs Bolanle Lawal on the false pretenses of clearing a Toyota Camry 2018 model, which was sent to her from Europe.

He said that the accused failed to clear the car and did not refund the money.

“ He was nowhere to be found; his mobile phone number was switched off, and all efforts to locate him failed.

“The case was reported at a police station, and efforts by the police to locate his whereabouts failed, until information was received on his hideout,” he said.

The offences contravene Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Jadesola Adeyemi-Ajayi, granted him N200, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Adeyemi-Ajayi adjourned the case until Aug. 28 for mention .
