The Murtala Mohammed International Airport Customs Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted concealed goods worth over N1 billion.
The Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, Comptroller Jayne Shoboiki, disclosed this in an interview with Shipping Position Daily at the command yesterday during physical examination of some imported goods.
The Comptroller affirmed that seized goods that contravene the Customs Extant laws will automatically be seized while the dutiable goods will be given a Demand Notice(DN) to pay their duties, even as she lamented that said that concealment affects the revenue generation of the command.
"Items that are not supposed to come into the country, those ones are going to be seized. But for high dutiable goods, revenues must be collected. Of course you known it is going to affect the revenue, any atom of concealment will automatically affects the revenue collection of the command", she stated.
Some of the items concealed include: a carton of brand new Fendi shoes, mobile WiFi, computer accessories, drugs concealed in a carton of oil equipment, slippers, textile materials, mobile phones, sun glasses, camera flash lights, among others.
According to her, "Talking about the value of the items you u have seen it yourself the value of these items will be running into billions. If we have to value these obviously it must be over N1billion. You can see when the shoes, the Fendi shoe itself a carton of that Fendi shoe can not go for anything less than N500, 000; just a carton of it"
The airport Customs boss, called for more stench with the relevant agencies and units to curtail further occurrences of concealment.
The Area Controller also said that it is against the Customs laws to bring in goods that were not labeled in English language.
