However, the shipping line which is still battling with criticisms from Nigerians over the charges it introduced last week, insisted that ‘overweight surcharge’ is in the company’s “continued effort to provide our customers with reliable and efficient service”.
It specifically explained that the new surcharge is for cargoes destined for Western African nations of Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Togo.
It also added that the sanction applies to Namibia in Southern Africa:
Such cargoes are expected to attract a surcharge of USD 300 per 20foot container with a gross weight above 17 tons.
