The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in Port Harcourt area office, has generated about N785.6 million revenue in 21 months, according to the General Manager, Abdullahi Dabai.
Dabai disclosed this figure in Port Harcourt on the sidelines of the facility visit by retired Vice Adm. Ishaya Ibrahim-led NIWA board of directors.
The manager, who said that the amount represented the revenue profile from 2017 to September 2018, added that the office covered Port Harcourt metropolis and parts of Abia state.
Dabai said that his office, with a landmass of about 8,100 square metres, remained the oldest and largest area office of the authority.
He said the office which recorded N481.1 million as internally generated revenue in 2017 could only generate N204.6 million from January to September 2018 after setting a target of N620 million for the year.
He said that the amount was far below N436,716,017.35 generated during the same period in September 2017.
Dabai said the “sharp reduction’’ in revenue generated so far in 2018 was due to some specific circumstances.
According to him, circumstances affecting revenue generation include closure of dredging companies due to multiple demands on the same subject from communities, states, local governments, NIWA and Ministry of Solid Minerals.
“The primary sources of revenue of the authority in the area office include the activities from the Use of Right-of-Way/Shore Utilisation and Boat Registration.
“Others are, dredging/reclamation, pipeline construction/laying and bridge crossing, wrecks removal, berthing fees and so on,’’ he said.
Ibrahim was accompanied on the facility visit by Senator Olorunmbe Mamora, the newly-appointed Managing Director of NIWA as well as other board members.
