The Police have arraigned a 40 year old man (Morgan Mohammed) for obtaining money from three persons with the promise of helping them secure a job with the Nigeria Customs Service.
He was also alleged to have serially obtained various sums of money from different victims on the pretence of helping them to buy one thing or the other.
He was arraigned last week before a Magistrate Court sitting in Apapa. Mohammed is facing a two count charge bordering on fraud impersonation and stealing.
According to the prosecutor; Sergeant Friday Imedu, the accused committed the offences between the August and October 2018, at Agip Estate, Satellite town, in the Apapa magisterial district.
The charge sheet read that: "That you Morgan Mohammed between the period of August to October 2018 at about 0900 at Agip estate, Satellite town, Lagos in the Apapa magisterial district did fraudulently obtain a cash sum of N30, 000 from one Ogechi Ezeka and N77, 000 from Ibewuike Emeka with the view of getting them a Custom form and helping them secure employment with the Nigeria Customs Service”.
He was also alleged to be parading himself in Customs uniform of the rank of a Deputy Superintendent of Customs (DSC).
The prosecutor alleged: "That you Morgan Mohammed between the same period of time, months and year, at the aforementioned magisterial district, do always impersonate yourselves by always wearing the Nigeria Customs Service uniform of the rank of a Deputy Superintend of Customs".
Apart from impersonating as a Customs officer and offering a fake Customs job, the accused was also alleged to have collected N150, 000 from the same Ogechi Ezeka to supply her 30 bags of rice, N120, 000 from Nweke Vivian to supply her 30 bags of rice, N70, 000 from Raji Thelma to supply her bags of rice and a cash sum of N7, 000 from one Musa Dauda with a view of getting him a security job.
The prosecutor added that, the accused between March and October 2018, also stole a laptop, generating set and money belonging to Raji Thelma.
According to Inspector Imedu : " Morgan Mohammed, between the period of March to October 2018 at No 2 Mobile estate, Satellite town, Lagos in Apapa magisterial district, did steal one HP laptop, valued at N30, 000, one Elepaq generator valued at N47, 000, Tecno phone values at N36, 000, ATM of Assess bank and a set of Kenword Sound set. Total of the assets valued at N113, 000 property of one Raji Thelma and thereby committed and offence contrary to section 287 of the criminal law of Lagos state 2015".
Inspector Imedu said that the offences are punishable under sections, 341, 287 and 78 of the criminal law of Lagos state 2015.
The accused pleaded guilty to the offences. The Magistrate, Mr. T.O Babalola denied the accused bail.
He adjourned the case to 5th of November 2018 for hearing.
