Two truck drivers, Abu Mustapha, 35 and Kareem Ogunleke 25, who allegedly absconded with their employer’s Mack Truck, were on Monday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
The defendants, who are both residents of Araromi Street, Papa, Ewekoro in Ogun, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and breach of peace.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, said the defendants allegedly ran away with the truck of Mr Frank Okeke, after they were deployed to Apapa for a local operation.
Unah told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Feb. 6 at 2.00p.m at Casso Bus Stop, Alagbado, Lagos.
He said the duo conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by constituting nuisance and fermenting troubles after they diverted the truck with Reg No. KJA 543 XF to an unknown destination.
“The complainant caught the defendants by tracking the said truck and handed them over to the police, and the truck was recovered from them,” the prosecutor said.
The offences contravened Sections 168, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).
Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, granted the defendants N200,000 bail with two responsible sureties in like sum.
Fashola said the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.
He added that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Fashola then adjourned the case until April 20 for hearing.
