Few weeks after the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) suspended the strike it embarked upon early July, fresh indications have shown that the level of compliance on the terms of agreement between the International Oil Companies (IOCs) and dockworkers is very high.
The President General of the MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, told Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week that there is 100% compliance by the IOCs with the conditions that led to the strike action was called off saying that they have started engaging stevedoring contractors.
It will be recalled that in July, 2019, the MWUN embarked on a strike action in all the seaports across the country.
But, two days after embarking on the strike, the union in a statement jointly by its President General, Adewale Adeyanju, and the Secretary General, Felix Akingboye suspended the strike.
But in his assessment of the level of compliance by the IOCs few weeks after the strike action was suspended, Adeyanju said, that the IOCs have started engaging the stevedoring contractors to register with them.
“The level of compliance is 100% okay; I cannot give details of the number of oil companies that have complied so far. Because now the stevedoring contractors have been engaged by the IOCs, the IOCs have engaged the stevedoring contractors to register with them and that is what is going to be the modus operandi, the level of operations with the dockworkers; how they are going to work in their companies. I think the level of compliance is excellent”.
