For the third time in a row, Nigeria yesterday lost her bid for a return to the Category ‘C’ of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
Feelers from the well-contested elections indicated that Nigeria was edged out by Kenya by just one vote.
The 20 seats in Category ‘C’ are for 20 States that are not elected under Categories ‘A’ and ‘B’, which have special interests in maritime transport or navigation and whose election to the Council will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world
The elected member nations are: Bahamas, Belgium, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey.
It is instructive that, while Southern Africa and East Africa got a at each, the volatile and piracy-invested West and Central Africa, where the Gulf of Guinea is lost out.
Apart from the Category ‘C’, China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Norway, Panama, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, United Kingdom, United States made Category ‘A’, while seats in Category ‘B’ were won by Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Arab Emirates.
