Mr. Tony Iwelu, the Chief Security Officer to the Minister for Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has died of electric shock from a shower hose in his hotel room in Kaduna. He died on Monday morning.
News of his death filtered-in on Tuesday, when one of the Minister’s aides broke the sad news as a WhatsApp message in a tribute, because no official statement had been issued.
Reports indicate that, Iwelu had travelled with the Minister to Kaduna to felicitate with Governor Nasiru El’rufai on his birthday when the incident happened.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside has described the late security officer as a "diligent, hardworking and humble" personality who performed his responsibilities with sense of devotion.
While commiserating with the Minister, the NIMASA DG said: "I have known the late Tony Iwelu for twenty solid years; his loyalty and devotion to duty are exemplary. I am sure his family, the family of Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi, friends, the State Security Service will miss him dearly for all he represents. My own family is heartbroken”.
