Poised to make freight forwarding business comfortable and devoid of corruption, the Association of Nigerian Licensed Custom Agents (ANCLA) has advised the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) to set up an intelligent gathering mechanism to comprise of non-Customs personnel who will discretely investigate clearing procedures in the ports, with a view to identifying challenges faced by agents.
The body also advised that customs should work towards eliminating human interfaces, with a view to arresting corrupt tendencies.
ANCLA said this in Lagos on Monday during the courtesy visit of the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hammed Ali, to ANCLA’s national secretariat.
The ANLCA said that transfer of officers appears cosmetic because the association has discovered that many officers stay in a Command for too long. Even when they are transferred, they find their way back.
The association also advised that, “Customs officers should also be arrested alongside clearing gents, if and when discrepancies are discovered”.
“We are asking the CGC to set up an intelligence gathering officers, who are non-Customs personnel to discretely investigate clearing procedures in the ports, with a view to identifying challenges faced by agents as herein enumerated. Customs should work towards eliminating human interfaces, with a view to arresting corrupt tendencies. The exit gate officers are a big clog in the wheel of cargo clearance, as they seek to sight containers that have been duly examined and released by terminal officers. This practice of intentional frustration of the cargo delivery process should be stopped by the CGC”, it added.
