The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has at last resolved that its coming elections of national executives will be by collegiate system.
After what initially appeared like a deadlock, the association’s national executive council (NEC) which comprises of all elected executives and members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) met on Friday and agreed that the election of National Executive Committee (NECOM) members will be by Collegiate.
The association had been sharply divided over whether the elections should be by what it called ‘annual general meeting’ (AGM) method or by collegiate method.
But, a statement issued Friday evening and signed by the association’s National Publicity Secretary of the association; Kayode Farinto, confirmed the decision.
According to the spokesperson, four major decisions were taken by the NEC. He disclosed that the meeting agreed that, ‘’the National Executive Committee (NECOM) Elections shall be collegiate, which means that only elected members of the NECOM, BOT, Zonal and Chapters are eligible to vote’’.
The meeting also agreed that the last Friday resolution is only for the coming elections, and that once elected the new executives are expected to liaise with the association’s board of trustees to amend the constitution for future elections.
The meeting also agreed that the association’s electoral committee should be allowed and encouraged to conduct credible election into its eastern chapters.
Industry stakeholders see last Friday’s decision to adopt a collegiate system as borne out of economic consideration for aspirants and voters.
By adopting the collegiate method, the aspirants will have to contend with and woo fewer electorates, unlike the AGM which would have involved all registered members of the association.
Meanwhile, as at last weekend, the two major contenders for the position of the association’s National President are Mr Tony Iju Nwabunike and Mr Emenike Nwokeoji, member BoT and Vice President respectively.
