The Tin Can Island Chapter of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) says it has partnered Niger Insurance Company to create a health insurance scheme worth N1million for 100 of its members at Tin Can Port.
New chairman of the chapter; Prince Segun Oduntan disclosed this at an official handing over ceremony to mark the coming on board of the newly-elected executives from the Prince Kayode Oyinlola-led executives.
Oduntan also promised that within his 100 days in office, the chapter would acquire a new official bus for operational purposes.
He also promised that his administration would provide monthly remuneration for 20 elderly members of Tin Can Chapter. He said that this would be done to assuage financial difficulties faced by some inactive elderly members.
Speaking further on the insurance scheme, Prince Oduntan explained that, "In case of any eventualities, insurance is one of our agenda that we have promised.
Niger insurance is here and I can assure you that we are paying for 100 people immediately here"
"Also, there is going to be remuneration for our elders, they have to be well taken care of, the work is stressful and at a particular age they cannot be running around again"
"Before 100 days are over, you will have a brand new boss for this chapter" he assured.
Oduntan also assured the immediate past chairman of the chapter that he was going to improve on wherever he has achieved.
"Our relationship with customs would be improved upon. Anytime you have a problem in handling your job, there is going to be a help desk at strategic points at each terminal and bonded terminals"
"We are also going to bring the best IT hands here that customs cannot contend with. We cannot fight alert, but you need to criticise constructively" he told his members.
Speaking earlier, immediate past chairman of the chapter, Prince Kayode Oyinlola urged members at Tin Can to continue to operate as one and resist any foreign association from springing up within their fold.
He urged them to set aside any acrimony from the conduct of the recent election and support the new chairman.
"We must ensure we operate as one ANLCA at Tin Can. There is no two ANLCA, therefore both camps must work together for the success of the present administration. ANLCA is a customs broker association and we are superior to any other association they might want to bring to Tin Can"
Reminiscing on the achievements of his executives, he said: "We inherited a Tin Can Chapter that was already decayed. On weekly basis, Federal Operations Unit officers of customs come here to arrest our members; some of us are still nursing the cases up till now"
"We have been able to stop that within a short period of time. Formerly, agents were locked up in 13 police stations across Lagos State"
“The secretariat, generator set are some of the legacies he left behind”, he added.
Also addressing the agents, an insurance officer from Niger Insurance Company, Mrs Elizabeth Wonuola said that ANLCA under Prince Segun Oduntan has agreed to pay N1million at any incident or disability to members.
"This means that everyone in this association will have something to hold on to. The association is buying the insurance for all its members. The aged ones would benefit. Apart from death, when you are not strong, your business would not suffer" she said.
