The Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Apapa said it has collected N227.3 billion in the first half of the year.
The Customs Area Controller, Apapa command, Mohammed Abba-Kura disclosed this in a media briefing in Lagos on Thursday.
According to him, the command’s collective resolve to enforce the Federal Government fiscal policy measures had yielded the desired results as could be seen from the revenue collected.
He added that equally, the secondary layers of checks and balances that were put in place had contributed immensely in recovering lost revenues that escaped the first layer in one way or the other.
He said: “In spite of all challenges, the Apapa Area Command has maintained its tempo at ensuring that maximum revenue is collected in addition to trade facilitation and suppression of smuggling"
"There has been steady improvement in revenue collection all through the half year, except for the month of May which recorded a decline of about N3.531 billion when compared between year 2019 and 2020"
"The command in half year of 2019 collected a total sum of N203.264 billion as customs duty and other charges like 7 per cent surcharge, value added tax, 1 per cent CISS among others"
"From January to June this year, the command collected a huge sun of N227,347,046,233.53, which represent an increase of N24,082,991,550.84 or 10.59 per cent increase from the previous year,'' he said.
Giving breakdown of the seizures made during the period, Kura said the seizures included: pharmaceuticals, rice, used clothings, vegetable oil, vehicles, packaging materials, detergent, candy milk, used tyres, cigarette filter, rugs and textile materials.
"All the seized items have been condemned by the court of competent jurisdiction and have now become the properties of federal government of Nigeria", he added.
The Apapa Customs boss nevertheless said that the command also handled export with the total tonnage of 1.642 million with valued at about US$171million
