President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed the National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) George Muoghalu as the new Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
Muoghalu’s appointment is coming one month after President Muhammadu Buhari had appointed the immediate past NIWA MD, Sen. Olorunibe Mamora a Minister of State, for Health.
Muoghalu is also the fourth Chief Executive Officer that NIWA is having in the past seven years.
Between year 2013 and now, the agency has had Mrs Mariam Ciroma, Boss Mustapha, and Sen. Olorunibe Mamora as substantive Chief Executive Officers, while Barr Danladi Ibrahim, a senior director in the agency has always acted as Acting Managing Director.
Confirming the news, the Spokesman for NIWA, Mr. Tayo Fadile said NIWA told Shipping Position Daily that he had been properly informed by the Acting MD of the agency, Barrister Danladi Ibrahim that the new appointment is authentic.
According to him, appointment of such magnitude are usually communicated down to the agency by the Minister of Transportation through his press secretary and since he didn't receive such he has been taking the news as a mere speculation.
He however assured that a press statement will be issued by the agency to confirm the development.
Meanwhile, a civil society organization, the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari over the appointment of Chief George Muoghalu.
The Chairman of CLO, Anambra Chapter, Mr. Vincent Ezekwueme who lauded the President, while speaking in Enugu, also said that the appointment would decisively impact, on a quick turn-around of the fortunes of the Onitsha River Port.
“This is the best independence gift to the people of South-East by the president”, Ezekwueme said,
He however appealed to the president to extend a similar political appointments to the family of former Senate President, Dr Chuba Okadigbo, a 2003 presidential running mate.
“It is clear that Buhari has provided the opportunity towards resuscitation of moribund Onitsha River Port"
“Muoghalu as a moralist, honest and servant leader must live up to the expectations of the President and Nigerians by being selfless and bearing social wellbeing of the citizenry"
“Especially as it concerns rehabilitating decrepit and deplorable Onitsha River Port to boost economic activities in the South-East as well as give them a sense of belonging"
“This indeed is a welcomed development and cheering news to the people of South-East and Nigerians,” he said.
