The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has called for the passage of the institutes Bill, saying that the bill will propel the institute into organising the sector and ensure adequate training of practitioners.
National President of the institute; Alhaji Ibrahim Jibril made this call on Tuesday in Lagos during the 2018 CILT Leadership Impact Programme and Investiture.
Speaking during the event, he said that the passage of the bill will also ensure that quality professional services are rendered in the sector.
According to him, when the bill is passed, the sector's contribution to the nation's GDP will rise from 2% to 5%, within the first year of its passage.
Jibril also expressed the institute's interest in seeing a full and functional Truck Transit Park (TTP), adding that those parks closest to the ports will be serving dual purposes of a TTP and point of certification for trucks.
"For ports destination trucks, we expect that the Ports Area Assess Certification which will be introduced and issued at the relevant TTPs, would cover an integrity test for their engine comprehension, haulage power, brakes amongst others. All these will confirm the designed load a given truck would carry", he said.
He however explained that the institute is also looking at a situation where specially licensed trucks are allowed to operate within a port area.
The CILT boss also said that the institute is looking forward to trimming the number of petroleum trucks calling at Apapa to lift fuel.
"A selection of the tank farms can be networked and piped in a manner that their products can be tested and pumped into the network through metering process"
