The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has predicted greater activities in the Exclusive Economic Zones(EEZ) and the Exclusive Free Trade Zones(EFTZ) in 2020.
The Acting Executive Director of CILT, Mr. Paul Ndibe who said this in a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, maintained that the activities will come with the specific things the zones need to do.
He said that though there were activities for the EEZ and EFTZ, in the past these were not specific.
"On the issue of this EEZ and EFTZ there will be greater activities in those sectors with specific things that they need to do"
"Previously there were things to be done, but they were not specific. Now each of EEZ and EFTZ and more likely to take form and they will further increase activities in the maritime sector"
Ndibe, however disclosed that on account of the prospects of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA), there will be greater activities in the maritime sector this year.
"Now on accounts of the prospects in the AFCFTA, it seems to me that there will be more activities in the maritime sector, but within the African region"
"That will be more activities in the African trade but maritime based. It will increase ship owners’ participation in terms of shippers either ordering or moving things within the African sub region"
"In terms of trying to draw up regulations that will facilitate and increase the volume of trade. These things are more likely to take shape and form this year"
Ndibe also added that there will be greater efficiency in the single window platform this year.
"And we will also expect greater efficiency with the single window for the documentation of imports and with the call up system. There will be a lot of improvement in the maritime sector in terms of ship ownership, I don't see that coming up because of the huge capital that is required" he concluded.
