The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has said that its Bill that is before the National Assembly will bring more regulations into the transport sector and eliminate quacks in the profession.
National President of the institute, Mr Ibrahim Jibril, said this in an interview with last weekend in Abuja.
He said that the Bill would seek to entrench a regime of standards and compliance mechanisms for the practitioners, competitive business environment and a regulatory regime that would eliminate quacks.
According to him, the Bill has provided different levels of sanctions for unprofessional conduct, indiscipline and unethical behaviour by individual professionals and corporate entities.
“Quacks are dangerous to professional practice and should be eliminated in order to pave way for investor’s confidence in the sector.
“With the passage of this Bill, the institute would be enabled to use the instruments of membership, licensing, accreditation, arbitration and adjudication to ensure sanity,’’ Jibril said.
He said that the important aspect of development process was building human capacity through standard training, certification and licensing.
According to him, if these elements are not sustained, the service delivery level would crumble.
“Transport is significant because of its high energy demand and its attendant environmental concern as transport contributes to global warming.
“The way forward should not only be on strict regulations but also trained human capital with a clear understanding of the issues at stake.
“Logistics and transportation sector in Nigeria is challenged and requires ingenuity for today and vision for tomorrow.
“This Bill holds the promise of bringing the entire logistics and transport chain into an organised system that will drive efficiency, promote trade facilitation.
“Stimulate social and economic development, promote education, research, professionalism and the quality of service delivery which will eliminate quacks and inject discipline,“ Jibril said.
