The Chattered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Bill last week passed second reading at the National Assembly.
This is even as the institute has revealed on-going plans to merge together with the Institute of Transport Administration (IOTA), Nigeria.
In a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week, President of CILT Nigeria, Mr. Ibrahim Jubril disclosed that any moment from now the NASS would call for a public hearing on the proposed bill.
He said that CILT currently does not have up to 3000 active members because most professional bodies in Nigeria find it difficult to become active members.
Jubril noted that before his executives were elected last year, it appears that CILT was not very visible. According to him, all that the institute concentrated on in the past was capacity building and education and generating a bit of membership.
He however assured that with the new administration, CILT will become more visible and be involved in many other things.
Speaking on the Bill before the National Assembly, he said: "We are running under a royal chatter, we are not yet recognised by the political class in Nigeria but thank God we are trying to have an Act of the National Assembly to back us up and give us visibility"
"Right now, our bill at the National Assembly has gone through second reading, we expect to have a public hearing very soon and we would move on from there, logistics and supply chain management cuts across every facets in Nigeria and with our Act in place, i see no reason why our membership is not going to increase"
"We would ensure that the profession is better regulated, we are not going to stay on training and regulation alone, we are going to make sure that we license members so as to ensure that quackery is eliminated and make sure that Nigerians get the best out of transporters and logisticians"
"I have spoken once with the President of IOTA and we have agreed on the need for both associations to come together. Members of both associations are transporters, IOTA may not have logisticians, they have only transporters, but CILT has both logisticians and transporters"
He noted that about 70% of the members of IOTA also double as member of CILT.
He also said that the current president of IOTA is a senior and we'll respected member of CILT.
