The Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology has organised a two-day empowerment training programme in boat operations and fishing for unemployed youths and women from some part of the South Western part of the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony for the 150participants who were drawn from Lagos, Osun, Edo and Ogun states, Provost of the College;
Dr Sule Abiodun said the College has been a reference point and a resource centre for the government as well as the private sector, because it has identified all the missing gaps, which according to him many institutions don’t do.
“We have identified all the gaps, in terms of manpower, facilities, including simulators, which have given us the edge over all other institutions, this is what has brought about your coming here for this empowerment and training programme’, he told the participants.
He also urged them to take full advantage of the training which, according to him, is meant to turn their lives around, even as he noted that the training was in line with the Federal Government’s policy on food security, self-sustenance, entrepreneurship, skills acquisition and empowerment for the citizenry.
Also speaking at closing ceremony last Friday, Dr Chuks Onuoha, Deputy Provost, Administration, noted that the training was designed to ensure the participants make their livelihood from any aspect of fish farming of their choice.
”We have 150 participants selected by each Federal Constituencies from Lagos, Osun, Ogun and Edo States for this training in Lagos.
”It is a Federal Government initiative aimed at ensuring that citizens have the basic skills to go into fish farming production.
”The College handles the training on behalf of the Federal Government.
”The training is done either at the States or here in the College,” he said.
Onuoha said that after the training, the College followed up on the participants and monitor their progress.
