The Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) yesterday announced a new date for election of freight forwarders into its Governing Council.
A statement by the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Mike Jukwe, a copy of which was sent to Shipping Position Daily confirmed that the election earlier scheduled for 16th May, 2018 is now to take place on the 29th June, 2018 in Abuja.
The Registrar also revealed that as a result of the change of the election date, nomination forms alongside detailed election time table and manual will now be available for collection as from Monday, 28th May, 2018 at the Councils’ headquarters in Apapa, Lagos as well as at its zonal offices in Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano, adding that the submission of completed nomination forms would also elapse by 15th June, 2018.
He expressed appreciation to stakeholders of the industry for their understanding and co-operation, he also re-affirmed the readiness of the Council for a successful Governing Council election that will enhance the repositioning of the sub-sector to enviable height.
Prior to yesterday, the Registrar had hinted one of our correspondents about the postponement. He had hinted that the shift in date was as a result of series of meetings the Council has had with stakeholders.
Shipping Position Daily recalls that, in the earlier guidelines released by the Council, about 26 new members who incidentally must be registered and practicing freight forwarders were to be elected on May 16, 2018 in Abuja.
A new Governing Council of the CRFFN was also expected to be inaugurated in Abuja on May 25, 2018.
Already the CRFFN has Federal Government- appointed Governing Council members, they are: Donatu Ozoemena, Benson Edosomwan, Abubakar Tsanni, Hassan Jonga, Senator Bisi Oyewo and Otunba Moshood Tijani.
Meanwhile, the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has confirmed that its members will participate fully in the coming elections into the CRFFN Governing Council.
The decision to backtrack from its earlier position to distance itself from the election, was reached at a general meeting of its top organs, namely: the NECOM, BOT, Chapters Executives, Zonal officers and Customs Licensed Agencies MD/CEOs was held on Tuesday at the National secretariat of ANLCA.
The meeting resolved that, “being inside to effect changes, is better than challenging the actions of CRFFN from outside”.
The National President of the association; Mr Tony Nwabunike was reportedly “applauded for securing several waivers, as he promised, for the largely onerous eligibility conditions initially set out in the rules and regulations rolled out, especially as it concerns payment of outstanding dues payable by individual members. The clauses banning the participation of elected, appointed members of associations, and those that went to court against CRFFN & FMOT, in the elections, were totally removed”
The meeting specifically agreed “that the first case challenging the lack of election to constitute a governing council of CRFFN, be withdrawn from court. The second case seeking the categorization of the corporate membership to be defined along professional lines is maintained”.
