The Comptroller Western Maritime Command of the Nigerian Custom Service, Comptroller Umar Yusuf said that the command seized Indian Hemp valued at about N1.069Billionin two years that were concealed variously in 225 jumbo bags.
Comptroller Umar gave this figure on Monday when he also disclosed that another batch of 62 jumbo bags of cannabis sativa (Indian Hemp) with Duty Value Paid of N411,500,000, weighing 830.800kg have been intercepted by his officers.
The Comptroller made the revelations during the handing over of the seized cannabis to the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Seme Command in Lagos.
Comptroller Umar said the latest seizure was made along Ojo/Alaba waterways by eagle-eyed patrol officers, he added that the Indian hemps were coming from Ghana.
He also maintained that the promotion of men and officers of the command will further boost the morale of the officers to work tirelessly.
Addressing newsmen he said," we network with our counterparts in Ghana and we also worked with the army and so many other agencies that was why the seizure was possible. These smugglers are very aware that the roads are blocked that is why they decided to go through the water, but I am assuring them that they have failed as my men are ever ready to fight them to standstill. Nigerians prefer to take cannabis from Ghana because it is stronger compared to the ones we have here and that is why most of them are involved in so many crimes like water robbery, terrorism amongst others. I also want to say that the Idiroko axis is blocked for smugglers. There is no way for drug traffickers in this administration".
