Director General, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA); Dr. Peterside Dakuku yesterday treated visiting national executive officers of the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association with disdain, the union leaders were made to stand while waiting for him for more than one hour.
Our correspondent who was with the team led by its President; Engineer Matthew Alalade described the situation as very embarrassing, even as the union leaders also lamented that they were deeply embarrassed by the agency
The officers of the Trade Union Congress affiliate association had been given 3 pm appointment to meet with the DG, only to discover that he was engaged in a meeting with another group whose identity could not be ascertained.
The waiting room of one of the DG's aides where they were supposed to be ushered into was occupied with other visitors and there was no sitting arrangement made for the officers of the seafarers’ association.
Having stood for about one hour, the officers were eventually told to go back to the reception on the ground floor, down from the 9th floor where the office of the DG is situated.
A visibly annoyed officer of the union accused NIMASA of deliberately treating the union leaders with such disdain.
He added that the apex maritime regulatory agency is supposed to treat all guests with courtesy.
Investigations further revealed that there were more than 100 persons waiting to meet with one official or another at the crowded ground floor reception room.
As at 4.30pm (yesterday) when this report was filed in by our correspondent, the union executives were yet to meet the DG for the meeting that was scheduled for 3 pm.
