Reconstruction of the failed Apapa Wharf road which leads to the Apapa port is to begin on the 7th of July.
The Federal Government confirmed this yesterday in Lagos at a meeting between officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, AG Dangote, Nigerian Ports Authority, Flour Mills and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the meeting, Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing; Engineer Godwin Ekeh, said that the federal government solicited the support of other government agencies and other stakeholders.
He also pleaded with truck owners to ensure that their trucks are taken out of the road as soon as possible to ensure the commencement of works on the roads.
"We will start work on the roads by 7th of July. We have gone through the roads to look at how we can divert the traffic during the period of the constitution. We are going to also put in palliative measures that will take care of the place we are going to direct the traffic till the road is completed”, he said.
“We are pleading with truck owners to be calm and manage the palliatives. The contractor, AG Dangote will be working day and night to ensure that the work is completed in time”, he stated.
According to him: "The road is jointly being reconstructed by AG Dangote Construction Company, Flour Mills of Nigeria and NPA”
"We want to encourage them by doing the right thing and we are appealing to the truck owners to cooperate with the contractor so that they can take charge of the construction sites”
Meanwhile the contractor of the project, AG Dangote, said that the partnership on the road started four years ago.
According to the Managing Director of AG Dangote, Mr. Ashif Juma, the road reconstruction will start with the construction of drainages, even as he stated that although the work is small, it is also very challenging.
"Though this project is very small, it’s also very challenging. I am calling on all the stakeholders for their collaboration, patience and support because without their support we will not achieve success. We are promising that within the next 12 months, the story of Lagos and entirely Nigeria will change through the reconstruction of the roads. We will also construct good drainages that will aid free movement of flood because that is the major problem Apapa roads are having”, he concluded.
