The Customs Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ has seized goods worth about N 1, 35Billion, even as the unit has arrest six suspects in connection with the various seizures in October
Disclosing this to news in Lagos on Wednesday, the Controller of the unit; Comptroller Mohammed Uba, said that the goods seized included: 10 trailer load of foreign parboiled rice, 64 bales of second hand clothing, 600 cartons of foreign poultry products, 13 parcels of India Hemp, 405 pieces of uses tyres and 54kg of foreign venerable oil.
He gave the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the goods as N 1, 353, 617, 104, 08),even as he added that they were seized between October 4th and 31st 2017.
Giving further insight, he told journalists that, “after a renewed vigor and determination to wage war against smuggling within our areas of jurisdiction, the unit has intercepted various contraband with DPV of One billion, three hundred and fifty three million, six hundred and seventeen thousand, one hundred and four Naira, eight Kobo (N1, 353, 617, 104,.08) in 120 seizures’’
‘’The seizures included: 6, 206 bags of foreign parboiled rice 50kg with DPV of N68, 910, 337.30, 67 bales of second hand clothing with DPV of N1, 206, 000, 600 cartons of foreign poultry with DPV of N3,600,000, 13 parcels of India hemp with DPV of N624, 000, 405 pieces of uses tyres with DPV of N1, 079, 895, 727.2, and 54 kegs of foreign venerable oil with DPV of N510, 300 totalling, N1, 353, 617, 104. 08”.
He also noted that the command recovered over N100million from payments and demand notices on general goods.
According to Uba, the command also seized two containers for contravening Customs laws.
“Similarly, two containers were also seized for contravening Customs laws. While one of the containers carried used fridges, 270 cartons of refined sun flower, 55 pieces of uses gas compressors, 18 packs of Juice, and other assorted ítems against cooking gas declared in the SGD. The other container was carrying 147 bales of printed wax and 168 bales of lace material as against new electronics declared in the SGD. These containers were seized for carrying contraband and entered under false declaration in order to beat the system contrary to the Customs and Excuse Laws section 147”
He also said that based on intelligence, the command seized 59 assorted vehicles from car marts in Ikoyi and Festac.
“Remarkably, based on intelligence reports, our operatives trailed and evacuated 59 assorted vehicles from car marts in Ikoyi and Festac among which over 40 of the vehicles are 2017 model ranging from Toyota Prado Jeeps, Lexus Jeeps, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Camry, Coaster bus, Toyota Hiace bus, among others currently under detention awaiting relevant Customs documents from dealer within a grace period of one month.
Some are even ballet proof which requires End User Certificate from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). Investigations will reveal further on those behind the clearance of these vehicles and must face the full wrath of the law. The first set we seized has been with us and nobody has come for it. The ones we seized at Ikoyi were in a house while Festac was at car mart”
He also appreciated the robust synergy that they have enjoyed with the military and the Nigeria Police.
“Let me also use this medium to appreciate the robust synergy that exist among the military , the Police other security agencies and our command operatives” he said.
