Freight Forwarders in the maritime industry have called on the federal government to approve a percentage of the N1.2trillion revenue collected by the Nigeria Customs Service to freight forwarders.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily, Mr. Olu Ademola Adefioye, Vice Chairman of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) at PTML Chapter said that freight forwarders were responsible for the huge success recorded by Customs.
He however expressed optimisms that the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) will address the challenges with the collection of the Practitioners Operations Fee (POF)
Adefioye said: "The customs cannot perform excellently without the freight Forwarders, we are the intermediary between the customs and the importer, if we make a wrong declaration, they would not be able to collect any revenue, it is due to the sincerity of the freight Forwarders that made customs to now boast that they have met their target"
"We have been agitating for agents to be compensated from these figures collected by Customs, even ever before now, thank God we are now having CRFFN in place, we now have the Practitioners Operations Fee (POF) which very soon will come to pass and agents will be rewarded at the end of the year"
Adefioye who is also the leader of Oodua Descendants Freight Forwarders Association lamented that the Oodua Freight Forwarders group did not make any impact in 2018.
According to him, "This is the major reason why we called ourselves together today to address the shortcomings, we need to work in harmony and speak with one voice, the Oodua maritime forum we are not in unity"
"New Oodua maritime forum is claiming that the forum belongs to ANLCA and that we should go away on our own, this is why we gathered ourselves together and form this new group"
