Fresh indications have emerged that the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) no fewer than 946 applications were received by the Council before eventually settling for Barrister Samuel Nwakohu as the new Registrar of the council.
A CRFFN board member who pleaded anonymity told Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week that the appointment of the Registrar followed due process, contrary to speculations in some quarters that he was imposed on the council by Minister of Transportation; Mr Rotimi Amaechi.
Even though the founder of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) reportedly canvassed that the Vice President of Chattered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Dr. Alban Igwe should be given the CRFFN job, the source confirmed that Dr. Igwe did not apply formerly for the job.
According to the CRFFN board member, the appointment of the Registrar was handled by the CRFFN committee on Appointment and Promotion, the final selection he said was made on January 7th.
Speaking on the process that eventually led to appointment of Barr Nwakohu, he said: "We were looking at somebody that possesses the requisite knowledge and competence.
They shortlisted over 946 applications, they started sieving and at the end of the day, it comes down to using the political zone arrangement"
"The unfortunate thing is that some people even submitted up to 10 and 15 applications, a single candidate submitting 15 applications, this was why the thing got to that level"
"We have a committee on appointment and promotion, the committee worked on it and it was even opened that if any other member of the council is interested they should participate in the process".
"I was not a member, but I went there for the interview and I took part in interviewing the man, the last lap of the interview took place on the 7th of January", he confirmed.
Speaking on the seeming delay and inaction in the Council, he said "It is the national elections that has been delaying the council from swinging into action"
"We have already started working, the first step is to put structures in place which you would build upon, we have started this in earnest, for example the appointment of the Registrar took a long process, it wasn't easy, people might not know that it is not something done in a day".
