The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has lauded the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) over the prevailing sanity in the nations’ seaports.
The institute said his yesterday when it paid a courtesy visit to the Council in Lagos.
Speaking during the visit, the President of the Institute, Ismaila Zakari who was represented by Mrs Onome Adewuyi, urged the council to ensure that Nigerian ports becomes the number one in Africa and in the whole world.
The ICAN boss also acknowledged that the responsibilities of the Council are very critical to the development of the nation’s economy.
Responding to an address by the representative of the Executive Secretary of the Council, the ICAN delegation leader said: “We know that we need this operator for everybody to operate in the sector. We want to say please continue to push and let the ports in Nigeria be the number one ports in Africa and indeed the world. Let us be another Singapore and a hub in Africa that everybody will like to come and do business"
He also applauded the council for the good job done in reforming the ports, saying that it has brought high patronage of Nigerian ports.
"Several years ago, we learnt Nigerians go to neighbouring ports like Cotonou to clear their cargoes due to the challenges we have in the ports, but we don't hear that anymore. I want you to give credit to yourselves that you have worked on all the bottlenecks that we have at the ports, I say congratulations"
"I observed a very high level of professionalism in this few minutes that we have spent here. I want to thank the Executive Secretary, he is doing an excellent job here. We want to also say that one of your own that is working with us is a good ambassador of the council. I am happy to tell you that today ICAN is on the board representing Africa in person of a former president of the Institute"
Also speaking the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Mr. Hassan Bello, who was represented by the Director Inland Services, Mr. Akin Makinde, said that the council boasts of capability because it ensures that the staff with the proper qualifications are employed.
"We pride ourselves with the quality of staff that we have. We have been able over the years to boast of capability because we ensure that we put in place the necessary staff with all the necessary qualifications to do the needful. Because of the quality of our work we have to the Nigerian economy, we train high qualified manpower" he concluded.
