The President of Nigerian Institute of Shipping(NIS); Capt Tony Onoharigho has been appointed by the government of Liberia as the country’s Deputy Registrar of Ships.
A letter conveying the appointment was signed by Mr Charles A. Gonoj, the deputy commissioner of the Liberian Maritime Authority.
The letter which was sighted by Shipping Position Daily confirmed that the NIS President has been engaged to carry out survey on all ships under 500 gross tonnage flying Liberia’s flag and issue them with appropriate certificate.
The appointment letter, which was dated August 12, 2019 also added that: “Records relating to vessels and statutory certificates and other documents which are entitled to recordation issued shall be forwarded to the Office of the Commissioner of the Liberia Maritime Authority in Monrovia, and at the Office of the deputy Commissioner, a central office where there shall be recorded or filed in properly indexed public registers.”
The letter also added that, “From the time of issuance of a Certificate of Registry until it’s expiration, termination, revocation or cancellation, whichever first occurs, the vessel shall be granted and shall enjoy the right to fly the flag of Liberia exclusively, unless its Certificate of registry is specifically endorsed so as to withdrawal that right.”.
Responding to the appointment when contacted by our correspondent, the new Liberia’s registrar of ships; Capt Tony Onoharigho said it as a positive development for Nigeria, even as he assured that he would do his best not to let the people and government of Liberia down.
