The Marine Beach Bridge in Apapa will be closed to traffic from March 4 for four months, to allow for comprehensive repair works on it.
Stakeholders at a one-day meeting yesterday in Lagos agreed that maintenance works on the bridge, scheduled to commence on March 4, for 128 days, would be done in phases.
Mr Godwin Eke, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, said at the meeting that the bridge was in critical condition and must be totally closed for rehabilitation, to prevent its collapse.
Eke said the bridge had to be closed to allow for a thorough job to be done on it.
He assured that the work would be done in phases, to prevent gridlock on the Apapa axis.
While responding to concerns of stakeholders, the controller said that a combined force of all the traffic regulatory agencies present was needed to tackle gridlock.
Thereafter, he reached a resolution with all the stakeholders that the traffic regulatory agencies should have a meeting on site on Feb. 27, to map out traffic-control strategies during the repairs.
Stakeholders at the meeting included representatives of the ministry of power, works and housing, the Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police, Federal Roads Safety Corps and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Others: are the Dangote Group, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, and the Association of Maritime Truck Owners, amongst others.
The Marine Beach Bridge was damaged by fire about 10 years ago and contract for its repair was awarded in 2012.
However, due to issues of funding, the contractor abandoned site.
