The newly-elected President General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria(MWUN); Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has spoken about his travails before clinching the coveted position penultimate weekend in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
Speaking last Wednesday at the formal handing over ceremony, the new President General of the union told the mammoth crowd of members of the union and other stakeholders that, when the campaign of calumny and series of petitions started coming, he almost gave up.
He said 22 petitions were written against him and the then-President General; Comrade Tony Nted Emmanuel.
“I told the PG (Nted) that I have never visited Police station and I have never written petition against anybody since I started this struggle, but what they did to me was so terrible that there was a day I was crying like a baby,” he said.
“He told me not to be a coward, and that I should be courageous, because we know that the petitions were all frivolous and baseless”.
On his part, the immediate past PG of the union, Comrade Nted lampooned some members of the union who were expected to vote for Adeyanju and who refused to do so, even after they were shown all the facts and they promised to support.
He recalled how the election which produced Adeyanju was almost marred by several petitions.
He vowed to publicly expose those who failed to vote for Adeyanju, even as he claimed that he had video evidences to show that they did not vote for the new President General.
Continuing , he said: “When this thing started , I called everybody that I needed to call, I didn’t threaten them, I asked them to vote for Ade( Comrade Adewale Adeyanju), if you vote I will know, if you don’t I will know. They went and did a different thing, all the 27 people that voted against him I have then in my phone, I will paste their names, so that you people will know them”.
“I am not saying they don’t have the right to vote for anybody they wanted, but why are they hiding and deceiving us. We talked to them , we appealed, even people who are very close to us, all the 27 of them, I have them in my phone, I will print then out for all of you to see. They are fools”, he told the cheering crowd.
