The Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA) has lampooned Greece- owned offshore logistics employer, ‘One Career’, for sidelining the association in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
The Deputy Secretary of the association, Mr John Okpono who disclosed this recently in an interview with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, also accused ‘One Career’ of starting and concluding negotiations on Collective Bargaining with only Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) arm of the association and leaving the senior staff association aside.
He also said that the association has written to Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), even as he warned that if there is no response, it may be forced to take the issue to the ministry of labour.
“Last month we had a slight misunderstanding because they concluded the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the ratings which belongs to MWUN, while the officers who belongs to us they stepped down our proposal. They started and concluded the negotiation for the junior workers who are the ratings. And the implementation has taken effect and the officers who are our members have refused to start the discussion neither are they willing to start it. As I speak with you now, they have commenced the increment for the junior workers with that of the senior officers; they have not increased their salaries they have even cancelled all their overtimes”, he told our correspondent.
“So as we speak now the officers have been refused to serve their wage bill, they are on salary strike now, they have not collected their salaries. So we are calling on the government, stakeholders and all authorities to talk to the world career management to stop this unfriendly labour practice that is being exercised on our members. We have given them a letter and we have even petitioned them through NIMASA, but if they fail to comply ,we will go straight to the ministry of labour”, he concluded.
