Swiss liner; Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has signed a 35-year concession agreement to run a container terminal at San Pedro Port in Ivory Coast, according to Reuters.
As part of the deal it will undertake a massive upgrade to the container terminal, the Swiss shipping company said on May 30, 2017.
Projects at the port are expected to reach US$510 million in value, of which just under half will be funded by MSC.
Investments at San Pedro port target not only the terminal’s displacement but also its extension, and will let 14,000 TEU megaships begin to berth there.
This could help San Pedro become the most competitive West African transhipment hub, said MSC.
Ivory Coast’s government said last year that the Bilal Group would partner with MSC on the project.
San Pedro Port handles a large volume of cocoa, the Ivory Coast’s main export.
The port is second in the country behind Abidjan Port, where a cargo ship recently collided with a ship-to-shore crane while berthing.
