A chieftain of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF); Mr Ugochukwu Nnadi has called for demurrages on containers to be reduced.
Nnadi said that the demurrages should be reduced to N5000 for 40ft and N2,500 for 20ft unlike the initial payment of N20, 000 for 40ft and N10, 000 for 20ft per day.
This call was conveyed in a statement signed by Nnadi in Lagos last week, a copy of which was sent to Shipping Position Daily.
He also advised that Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) and Ikorodu terminal be designated for empty and export laden containers which according to him, will reduce trucks loaded with containers flooding Apapa and Tin Can port access roads.
"From KLT and Ikorodu terminal, vessels that can sail on the draft of the channels will go there and load while those that cannot go there will load through badges'
Speaking further, Nnadi advised the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to start collecting demurrages on container returned, but not evacuated.
"Any container returned but not evacuated after a period of time should start paying demurrage to NPA", he argued.
Nnadi also said that Lilypond terminal being nearer to the ports should be designated for overtime cargoes, adding that since its closer to the ports, no shipping company or terminal operator will have any reason not to transfer overtime cargoes to the place.
Nnadi added that the Otto Wharf and OrileIgamu truck terminal be developed in partnership with concerned authorities as truck terminals.
