Foremost maritime journalists and Publisher of Shipping Position Daily; Mr Sesan Onileimo has emerged as the President of newly-formed African Maritime Journalists Association (AMJA).
The formation of AMJA was in line with one of the resolutions adopted at the just-concluded inaugural Africa Maritime Journalists Conference (AMJOC), held 29 and 30 January 2016, in Accra, on the need to establish a continent-wide association or forum for maritime journalists in Africa.
In line with the resolution, delegates resolved and elected a four-member executive council, which will promote the objectives and benefits of the conference across the continent, at regional and national levels.
In a statement issued in Lagos by the chairman of the organizing committee of the journalists’ conference, Mr Lanre Badmus, it was explained that, “delegates at the first day of the conference endorsed the recommendation that such an executive team should reflect the pan-African nature of the conference, pending when other necessary arrangements are put in place”.
The four offices considered were: President, which was allotted to Nigeria; Vice President, allotted to Southern Africa. The post of General Secretary was allotted to Eastern Africa; and position of Treasurer was allotted to the host country- Ghana.
According to the statement, participants met on the second day of the conference to consider and adopt the following nominees as proposed:
It added that, Mr Sesan Onileimo, Publisher of Shipping Position Daily Newspaper(print and online), and Producer of Shipping Position Live on Radio eventually emerged as President of the continental body.
Similarly, Mr Terry Hutson, Publisher of Ports and Ships from South Africa emerged as the Vice President , while the position of General Secretary was clinched by Mr George Sunguh from Kenya He is the Editor of Our Ports Magazine and also Communication Executive for Port Management Association for Eastern and Southern Africa.
Also, Miss Grace Nana Esi Boateng from Ghana emerged as the Treasurer. She is the Presenter of Maritime and Port News on Radio in Accra.
According to the statement, a date and venue for the inauguration ceremony will be communicated later.
