The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) says the Federal Government loses more than N10 billion monthly because of inactivity at Tin Can Port Command 2 of the Nigeria Customs Service located at the Lillypond, Ijora area of Lagos.
Lamenting the loss which he attributed to lack of patronage in Lagos on Monday, the Chairman of Customs Tin Can 2 Area Command of the association; Mr Olufemi Olabanji, however said that the terminal had capacity to handle 25,000 containers.
“The Tin Can Area two commands at Lillypond has capacity to take 15,000 containers and an export bay that can take 10,000 containers.
“Lillypond has facility for export and it is underutilised and we appeal to the Federal Government to do something urgent to reverse this trend,” he said.
According to Olabanji, efforts should be made to divert ships (containers) from some ports to the terminal for easy access and clearance of goods.
“We are aware that it takes some days to clear goods in some Lagos Ports. We want a situation where some of the containers should be sent to the Lillypond terminal.
“This process will make the area to be active, generate revenue from imports and exports.
“At the moment, the terminal is not being put to use. The facilities there are wasted because of inactivity,” he said.
Olabanji urged the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Ports Authority, as well as the Nigerian Shippers` Council to ensure that ships are stemmed to Lillypond terminal.
