The Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside, says women have contributed immensely to the growth and development of Nigeria since Independence.
Peterside said this on Wednesday during the International Women’s Day with the theme “Be Bold for Change’’, in Abuja.
According to him, women deserve to be given every support to achieve more.
“Women are described as indispensable to any worthy cause in humanity.
“Women are known for their steadfastness, industry and perseverance in the face of daunting challenges across the globe.
“Women are proven to hold their heads high if given the opportunity,’’ Peterside said.
The NIMASA boss commended President Muhammadu Buhari for giving women prime positions in his administration, saying women had not wavered in their determination to make Nigeria better.
According to him, in all, in my endeavours, I have always given women the much-needed support and encouragement to aspire to the highest positions.
He said he would continue to ensure a level-playing ground for women.
Peterside said that NIMASA under his watch would give women every leverage to become whatever they so desired “as women have proven time and again that they have all it takes to make humanity better’’.
He called on leaders at all levels to do all within their powers to eliminate prejudices against women and promote gender equality, especially in relation to access to education, healthcare and capital, eradicating female circumcision, among other harmful practices.
The UN set aside March 8 of every year as a day marking the International Women’s Day.
