The Nigerian Ports Authourity (NPA) yesterday blamed technical hitches for the delayed take-off of its trailer park located at the Tin Can Island port in Apapa, Lagos.
The General-Manager, Corporation Communications of the Nigeria Ports Authority; Engr Mr Jatto Adams, said even though technicalities were responsible for stalling the take-off of the park, the Federal Ministry of Works, Housing and Power had finally got approval for the completion of the project.
Giving an insight, he explained that, “the park as you know is located beside the shoreline. So it is the barricade of the shoreline that needs to be protected. “Now that the work has been approved, the park will soon come alive and the port area will be free of gridlock”.
He added that the park, which would act as a buffer to trucks plying the ports in Lagos would be help clear the roads of parked articulated vehicles.
The 700- truck capacity park is currently at 90 per cent completion for private sector management.
Shipping Position Daily recalls the Honeywell Group had in 2018, offered to carry out the completion of the shoreline protection of the truck park.
Recently, while opening the IJora/Apapa Bridge, the Director, Highway Service, South West, Mr. Funsho Adebiyi, also promised that the Tin can Trailer Park, the main parking facility with supporting amenities, including a police post, convenience and an office building (to be used by the Nigeria Ports Authority) is ready.
He disclosed that the entire work, including the shoreline protection, would be done within the next three months.
Confirming the development, the contractor, Mr. Gianfranco Albertazzi, said that most of the materials needed for completion of the shoreline were already at the port awaiting clearance.
