The Police Command in Anambra on Thursday, described as false, news making round that arms have been imported into Nnewi, one of the commercial towns in the state.
Mrs Nkeiruka Nwode, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command stated this in a statement in Awka.
According to her, the rumour is baseless, adding that it is capable of causing tension and panic in the state.
She quoted the Commissioner of Police in the state, Alhaji Garba Umar, as assuring the people that anybody linked to such `baseless and senseless rumour’ will be apprehended and prosecuted.
Nwode also said the command had investigated and found out that nothing of such happened in Nnewi or any part of the state.
“I am very surprised that some people will unnecessarily want to create security tension in the state by peddling baseless and wicked rumours.
“It is very regrettable and unfortunate that some people take pleasure in causing fear and tension, aimed at pulling down the efforts of the command,’’ she said.
According to her, such development was also aimed at pulling down the administration of Gov. Willie Obiano.
“The command warns that the new Commissioner of Police will not take such issue lightly and will deal decisively with peddlers of baseless rumours.’’
The police image maker assured the peddlers of such rumour that they would be made to face the consequences of their actions.
She further assured the people of the state of the continued readiness of the command to ensure the safety of life and property.
Nwode, therefore, urged the people to ignore the rumour and go about their normal businesses.
