Shippers under the aegis of Shippers Association Lagos state (SALS) have appealed to the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to ensure that service providers in the nation’s seaports get paid in Naira and not Dollars.
The president of SALS, Rev. Jonathan Nicol who said this last week in a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, also said that any of the service providers that fail to trade in Naira value should not be regarded as a friend to the country.
“We want NPA to reduce their cost and we want also that trading in Nigeria should be in Naira, and not in the value of Dollar. So any service providers who does not want to trade in our currency is not a friend to the country”
He added that trading with Naira will help reduce the heavy bill paid by shippers.
“Because you cannot come and be using Dollar to trade in our country, trade with the Naira and use the Naira value and not the Dollar value. So NPA should think about that, all these heavy bills will get some kinds of sanity”
Nicole also pleaded that all empty containers littered around the ports to be evacuated so that sanity can return to the area.
“Again, all empty containers in our country should be evacuated so that people will leave in their homes with their eyes closed when they sleep. They have no justification to keep their empty containers on our streets and high ways”, he stressed.
