The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has acknowledged that there is a huge infrastructural deficit in the country especially, in the transportation sector, it consequently promised to work closely with the Infrastructural Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) to address the issue.
Executive Secretary of NSC; Mr Hassan Bello said this yesterday in Lagos during a meeting with the ICRC boss; Engineer Chidi Izua.
Speaking during the meeting, Bello, said that although the deficit is huge, it is not insurmountable.
He also maintained that, ICRC, with the help of its Acting Director General, is a platform to actualize the dream of infrastructural development in the county.
"Transport grows every economy and here especially in the ports. We really need to grow the infrastructure and we are looking at the rail system. There is need to work together with ICRC, to actualise this. There is also need for a modern port where automation is the key, modern traffic control is the key", he told his guest.
He also added that: "Nigeria can be at the top of exporting countries, what we lack here is adequate infrastructure. Our dry ports must be modern. The cost of transportation should also be reduced and brought to the door step of every Nigerian. The reason shipping is high in this country is that containers come and go empty".
Bello also said that the Trucks Transit Parks (TTP) which the Shippers Council is spearheading is a modern transport infrastructure that must be linked electronically to the seaports.
Speaking in the same vein, the Acting Director General of ICRC, Engr. Chidi Izua, said that transportation plays a key role in both national and international development.
He said transportation allows market to grow by enabling a seamless movement of goods and services.
He also maintained the ICRC is responsible for public and private partnership on infrastructure adding that “Transportation provides employment for people".
