The Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hammed Ibrahim Alli, has acknowledged that despite his efforts to fight corruption in the service, some of his officers are still compromised
Ali said this on Monday, while disclosing that Customs has seized container loaded with 3,845 cartons of Tramadol and 1,211 cartons of Really Extra drugs with Duty Paid Value of N242,688, 000 imported from Asia, China and India.
According to Ali, the drugs intercepted, which include Tramadol capsules, Really Extra and Royal, are detrimental to human health.
He said the containers intercepted on the Ibadan Expressway on the Sango Otta axis, originated from India.
Ali said the owner of the container would be traced and would be punished in accordance with the law.
Col Alli admitted that the drugs came into the country because some officers compromised.
“If drugs like these, absolutely prohibited, are being imported, then we have a cause for concern.
“We are the gate keepers, we have to think again and re-strategise on what to do, especially with our borders and sea ports; that is one concern.
“This is why I am appealing to Nigerians: You can do other things and make money; but not completely ruin lives and health because you want to make money.
“Please if you do get information, the Nigerian Customs Service will be glad to have that information so that we can reduce this thing to the barest minimum”, he said.
He added that although the level of compliance by his officers is high, there are still bad elements among them who he promised to fish out and punish. “The level of compliance by my officers is good but we still have bad elements among us. So what we are trying to do is to expose those ones, remove them and punish them. And I hope as we go along doing this with the help of Nigerians we will be able to reduce the menace of this officers to the lowest minimum.
Ali said the owner of the container would be traced and would be punished in accordance with the law.
