Transportation expert and the South West Zonal Chairman of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO); Alhaji Ganiyu Salami, has stated that the transportation sector is very important to the economy of Nigeria.
Ganiyu made this known at the recent inauguration of the Alaba unit of the sector.
He maintained that the inauguration of the new unit is a catalyst to the hitherto plans of reactivating the sector.
He maintained that over the time, the role played by the association is gradually being eroded due to the lacklustre attitude of the owners who surrendered the daily running of their investments to their drivers whom in most cases, assumed power of attorney over the business.
He said: “NARTO has three sections which are the wet cargo, commuters and the dry cargo which happens to be the foundation of this our great association. Over the time the much towering and leading roles played by this sector is gradually being eroded due to the lacklustre attitude of the owners who surrendered the control of the daily running of their investments to their drivers whom in most cases assumed power of attorney on the business, hence the pitiable condition most of the investors now found themselves”.
However, he maintained that, “NARTO as the father of all the transport operators in the country has vowed to reactivate the sector with the cooperation of every one of us; both the investors, officers and members of the association to achieve the lost glory of the sector”.
