The General Manager, Denca Bonded Terminal; Mr. Tony Asiadiachi has blamed the tiny ropes used for latching of containers as the cause of trucks accidents in the country.
Asiadiachi in a chat with our correspondent last week, said some of the trucks that use its bonded terminal only applies the tiny rope as latching since the government asked them to latch their containers, he explained that an empty container weighs about two and half tons which is difficult for just a rope to hold, he said for accidents to stop, government must ensure that articulated vehicles that have hooks are the ones granted permission to carry a container.
You will recall that no fewer than three fallen containers were recently recovered by emergency responders along Mile 2 Expressway, with container killing two women.
The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, last month confirmed that 800 articulated vehicles and 126 drivers were arrested within Lagos, Ogun and Oyo State traffic corridors for failing to latch their containers.
Asiadiachi however maintained that the only way to stop falling of containers on the roads is for government to insist that, only road-worthy articulated vehicles with hooks are allowed to carry containers on the roads.
“Whatever you call latching here is meaningless, because if they latch the container, it is not that tiny rope that is holding the container, but since the government said they should latch, you will see most of them using the tiny ropes for latching, there are several containers here with the those tiny ropes and these ropes cannot hold a container; an empty container is about two and half tons, so it’s not that rope that will hold it, not to now talk of a 40ft container, so the government must ensure that only fit and articulated vehicles with hooks are allowed to carry containers and these will reduced the accidents on our roads”, he said.
