Barely on week after the fracas between Lagos state task force on environment and hoodlums at the Ijora area of Lagos state, truckers have inaugurated investigation committee to ascertain the root cause of the matter.
Truckers who spoke under the auspices if the Council of Maritime Truck Unions and Association (COMTUA) said the investigation which will be concluded at the association's Annual General Meeting (AGM) next month, will also ascertain the amount that was lost in the fracas.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily on Tuesday at Tin Can Island Lagos, the Head of Operations of COMTUA, Alhaji Abdullahi Inuwa expressed disappointment over the constant attacks on their drivers at the park.
Inuwa disclosed that the outcome of the investigation will determine whether truck owners will continue to patronise the Ijora Truck park or not.
He said: "Our national leadership has called to get a comprehensive assessment and a thorough investigation of what happened that day"
"We have already inaugurated a committee in that regards and after the investigation maybe during our AGM next month we will take decision on that"
"We are still gathering information to know what actually happened on that day, and why hoodlums had direct access into the terminal".
However, he said he could not ascertain how much was lost to the fracas, adding that the investigation will unravel it.
"For now I cannot say how much was lost, because I was not on ground the day it happened, I only saw like two Hilux vans that were burnt. And I also know that part of the building there was affected.
He added that if there is no adequate provision of security for their drivers, the group may consider the option of leaving the park.
Inuwa reiterated that the security of lives of their drivers and managers are of importance to COMTUA, even as he added that if the management of the terminal cannot guarantee security, the association will have no option than to abandon the terminal.
"What happened at Lilypond is very uncalled for, if our drivers and managers will be attacked at the truck park on a regular basis. I think if something is not done fast, we will ask our drivers to leave the park"
